Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
